Samba Galêz

|
The band has been in existence since 1990. It comprises around 70 members from the South Wales area. Our musical repertoire is based on afro-centric rhythms spanning the world from Brazil to Cuba (rumba, rumba francessa), Senegalese sabar inspired rhythms, Tanzanian nines and so on. Our strength lies in being able to multi-layer them through a system of top secret signals that can shift grooves sideways, backwards and even metrically-modulating them on occasions which is as much fun for the players as it is for our audience. Why? Because nobody knows what is happening next. That way we we constantly surprise both you and ourselves with completely unplanned rhythmic revelations that defy categorization. As a community band, everyone is welcome at the access courses which are run annually. This introduction provides new members with the basic skills so that they can keep up with the core band. Generally arrangements are changed often enough that even the long-standing members have to stay on their toes. |
