Arco Iris is a fun and successful community samba band based in Cambridge. We were formed in 1992 to provide an opportunity to people in the local community to learn and enjoy samba music, and we remain completely open to new members.
We play a variety of pieces from Brazil, Cuba and elsewhere, including Batucada, Samba Reggae, Timbalada, and Maracatu. In addition, we develop new pieces and occasionally arrange workshops with people like Ravin Jayasura, Sam Alexander, Dave Willets and Pat Seldon.
We meet weekly for workshops, and regularly play gigs in Cambridge and further afield. We have also developed strong links and help with the organisation of Eastern Bloco, a collaboration of bands in the eastern area.
Bath House on Gwydir Street, Cambridge [map] on any Wednesday from 7:30pm and give it go.
The first session is free. After that it's a piddly £2 (or £1 for concessions, 50p for kids under 16).

First formed in September 1996 by two Anthropology lecturers at University of East London, the band has gone from strength to strength being a very audible addition to many events and protests across London and the South East over the last nine years, and has helped spawn at least two other protest bands, including the veritably pink and silver 'Rhythms of Resistance' and the american based 'Infernal Noise Brigade'.
Over the years we have been involved in many and varied events and interesting situations, played on beaches and benches, Masquerade and Moulin Rouge, we've chased Alice down the rabbit hole and come out the other side smiling, occupied a university, fought for justice, equality and hippydom, marched through rain and snow, and welcome the sun each year at Stonehenge by order of King Arthur himself. Infact, it would probably be easier to say what we haven't done. Get in touch if your interested in Booking or Joining in.
Named after the Portugese for noise, we've been rattling windows in Brighton and the south of England since Carnival Collective's "Beating Time" community drumming project in May 2000.
Led by Pat Power and Tamlyn Wiltshire, we play a variety of Brazilian, hip-hop, ragga, bhangra style beats. Loudly.
Highlights have been irritating the Countryside Alliance marchers in Parliament Square, disturbing shoppers in Tunbridge Wells, Portsmouth and Slough, torchlit processions in Lewisham, Oxted and Brighton, and playing alongside so many sambistas at both Brighton Samba Encounters.
Bat2k were formed in 1994 for the study and performance of the street beats of Brazil. The quest goes on.
Regular workshops and performances given at a wide range of events. New members welcomed.
Bat2k currently host ' Sambando' a monthly club night featuring Brazilian dance class, DJ's, special guest bands and artists and of course Banda Bat2k. See website for details of events.
