Afro Dance Class with Irineu Nogueira

On Sunday the 22nd of August, Bloco-Afro ERI OKAN and Maracatu Estrela do Norte will be hosting open Afro-Brazilian drumming and dancing workshops in preparation for Notting Hill Carnival. These sessions will be held at Waterloo Action Centre, 14 Baylis Road Waterloo, London SE1 7AA. Maracatu Estrela do Norte - 2pm - 4pm Bloco-Afro ERI OKAN - 4pm till 6pm The classes are £6 each.(£10 for two, if also participating in another class on the same day) This will be followed by the FINAL REHEARSALS on Saturday 28 August at Rich Mix Cultural Foundation. 35/47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA. 12 till 2.15pm: Rehearsal for Maracatu Estrela do Norte's procession on Sunday 29th August at Notting Hill carnival 2.45 till 5pm: Rehearsal for Bloco-Afro ERI OKAN's parade in Notting Hill Carnival on Monday 30th. Carnival Registration fee: £35 for one day and £45 for two days. This fee includes the rehearsal on Saturday 28th August, your T-shirt (drummers), refreshments and participation in the carnival. Participation in the workshops does not oblige anyone to go out at Notting Hill Carnival and likewise if there are people who would like to take art in carnival but can't make all the sessions, that's OK too! Teachers: Irineu Nogueira is a legend in Brazilian dance who has become a solid reference within the Brazilian and African rhythms and movements scene in Brazil. He is a wholehearted dancer who combines genuine passion with contemporary vision. His classes are known for the creative way he approaches Brazilian folklore and West African traditions. Accompanied by Bloco-Afro ERI OKAN he will lead a class based in Candomble and dances from West Africa. Jully Caxiado is a fantastic young dancer, from Pernambuco, Brazil. She has a wealth of experience in the traditional dances of Recife and Olinda. She will lead a class based in the dances of Pernambuco includin Maracatu, Afoxe, Coco and Ciranda. In Brazil she worked with Toque Leoa, Maracatu Nacao Pernambuco and the Bale Cultural de Pernambuco. She has a wealth of experience in the traditional dances of Recife and Olinda, and makes it her mission to communicate the fun and grace to be found taking part in these rich dances and frolics. The class will be accompanied by Maracatu Estrela do Norte. Sam Alexander is a pioneer in the UK samba world. In the late 80's he joined the London School of Samba in their first year and co-founded several early UK samba groups including Bristol School of Samba and Samba Galez. He lived in North-East Brazil in the early 90's where he performed and recorded with Maracatu Nacao Pernambuco and Olodum and has since then worked as a musician and educator and is a driving force in North-East Brazilian roots music and dance in the UK and Europe.
