Samba Marcianas

SAMBA MARCIANAS, the Exeter-based samba band, is run by drum-kit teacher Scott Craig. They are the performance arm of EXETER SCHOOL OF SAMBA. In their first year they performed at a variety of public events, including the Exeter Respect Festival. Scott started Samba Marcianas in September 2008 with a few of his drum pupils. He wanted to create an opportunity for kit-players to work together and develop their musical interaction and performance skills. The group now has over a dozen professional 'Sambistas' (aged 9-16) and is looking to increase their membership via the Exeter School of Samba. The Sambistas learn complex and exacting traditional rhythms and are also encouraged to contribute original ideas for rhythmic breaks and links, which further develops their composition skills and gives the Marcianas their distinctive feel and personality. The result is a fun, vibrant and energetic set. The members have already been highly acclaimed for their professionalism and musicianship and have been called 'the best junior samba band in the world'!
