Not From Ipanema

Founded in November 1995 by their maestre, Mark Lockett, after an excellent outdoor workshop during the Wirksworth Festival, the town''s annual arts fortnight held in early September. The group has been practicing on and off since their formation but were struggling to find players.

The bands numbers vary from between 4 and 20 depending on the weather and various cosmic influences and they have performed only one gig so far at a charity folk event ! The band was so suprised by the rapturous reception that they have not yet recovered fully from the shock but futher performances are planned for mid 1997 onwards.

They play batucada, samba reggae, afoxe, and maracatu with a nice laid back style, and have even attempted to play samba in 7 on a few occasions. They meet upstairs at the George pub in Wirksworth from 7:00 to 9:00 on Thursday evenings where the beers pretty good as well. Beginners and experienced players are more than welcome to come along.
