Maracatu Estrela do Norte

|
Maracatu Estrela do Norte was formed in 2002 by Sam Alexander. We are a drumming group based in London that plays Brazilian folkloric music from the Pernambuco in the North East of the country, focusing on Maracatu from Recife and Olinda in particular. We hold fun and informative workshops in various Brazilian rhythms, such as Afoxe, Ciranda, and Boi, though we specialise in Maracatu de Baque Virado. We take part in The Notting Hill Carnival each year, as well as other events including Glastonbury, the Watts Festival and more. We play authentic Brazilian instruments - you can come and learn the Gongue (the Maracatu bell), the Abê (a Maracatu shaker), the Caixa (the Maracatu snare drum) or the Alfaia/ Bombo (the Maracatu bass drum). We are the first Maracatu group in the U.K and all are welcome to come and participate in our open workshops. Workshops are 7:30-10pm each Thurs evening (Apr - July 2010) in rehearsal rooms five mins from New Cross Gate Station (Overland, East London Line) Instruments are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own if you have them. |
